Parent of Snapchat messaging app Snap Inc plans to announce its gaming platform for developers next month, online news service Cheddar reported on Friday, citing a person familiar with the matter. The new gaming initiative will be unveiled at Snap’s first-ever summit for content and developer partners in Los Angeles on April 4 and video initiatives like more original shows will also be announced, the report added.
Technology news website The Information first reported that Snap was working on a gaming platform in June 2018.
It makes perfect sense for Snapchat, given the app’s younger user base, to put more focus on gaming content, which could open up major revenue opportunities through in-game purchases or advertising.
Facebook’s Messenger app has been offering gaming-related features for years now. So, if Snapchat gets games on its platform, it would simply be adding a new source of revenue from developers who would want to place their games on the app, and also from advertisers who would want to place ads in those games. Another added benefit would be that users who would be busy playing games on Snapchat, wouldn’t really be spending too much time on Instagram.
